What are mini dental implants?

Mini dental implants are designed to completely replace your natural tooth. Just like traditional implants, they are prosthetic tooth roots that are inserted into your gum and allowed to fuse to your jawbone. After a healing period, they are loaded with a custom-made dental crown or denture (your replacement teeth). Just like traditional implants, they will restore your functionality and look and feel great in your mouth.

Mini implants can be used in a variety of situations. Depending on your needs, we can help you determine which implant option is right for you. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Sykora today to learn more about your options.

How are they different than traditional dental implants?

The difference between traditional dental implants and mini implants is simply their size. Mini dental implants are smaller in diameter than traditional implants — typically about half of the diameter, actually. While traditional implants require a substantial amount of bone structure to be available for placement, mini implants require much less and can be placed in deteriorated jawbones where traditional dental implants cannot.

The versatility of mini dental implants does come with a price: they aren’t as strong or long-lasting as traditional implants. Depending on your circumstance, one type might be better than the other. It simply depends on your specific situation and your personal needs.

What are the benefits of getting implants over removable dentures?

Dental implants are better than removable dentures because of their permanent nature. Because they are fused to the jawbone, they are strong and can withstand higher chewing pressures. They are also easier to clean — just brush and floss like normal. Removable dentures require that you regularly remove them for maintenance and hygiene — even still, they are prone to collecting bacteria. Dental implants will give you the support you need without the worry of added cleaning responsibilities or your teeth becoming loose in your mouth.
