Bruxism Guards

Bruxism Guards

At K.C. Sykora DDS Family and Implant Dentistry, we want to help you stay as healthy as possible. Part of that is helping you avoid damage to your healthy teeth. This damage can come in the form of wear, broken teeth, or cracks. Our bruxism/night guards can help you avoid these dental issues and save you and your family serious time, pain, and money.

Why might I or my child need a bruxism/night guard?

Bruxism is a condition characterized by the grinding or clenching of your teeth when your mind is preoccupied — usually during sleep or work. This grinding can wear down the teeth, or even cause cracks and other extensive damage. While the cause of bruxism is usually neurological, we can treat the symptoms and protect your teeth from needing dental work.

If you are a grinder, a bruxism/night guard appliance will protect your teeth from further wear and damage.

How do bruxism appliances work?

The appliances are very simple oral devices. They are custom constructed from a hard, clear acrylic plastic to fit only your mouth and to rest over your upper teeth and in between your upper and lower teeth to prevent them from being damaged during grinding episodes. These appliances are nothing like the one-size-fits-all, over-the-counter mouthguards that you will find in stores. If you are looking for an effective way to protect your teeth from potential damage or wear, ask us about getting a bruxism guard.

How are bruxism appliances made?

Bruxism guards, which prevent wear during sleep or periods of stress, are constructed in a dental laboratory. This will take several weeks, but you will be receiving a quality appliance crafted just for you. To determine if this is appropriate for you or how we can help meet your specific needs, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Sykora.
